Marble

Description

Marble is a metamorphic rock which means the rock started out as a different type of rock, but was then subjected to immense amounts of heat and pressure to form a completely different composition, which in this case is marble. The word “marble” is derived from the Greek word marmaros, meaning “shining stone.” The reason the rock was referred to as “shining stone” is because of the high amounts of calcite which is the main mineral found in marble. This mineral allows light to penetrate the stone before it is reflected. Marble comes in many different colors and patterns. It can be white, black, green, and more with many different vein patterns.

Marble is extracted from a quarry. Big blocks of marble are taken from the earth and cut and selected for their quality to get further processed. The marble is then taken to a fabrication warehouse where it is cut into slabs and shaped into desired dimensions and specifications. The cut slabs are then taken to be polished to get a classic smooth marble look. This process includes grinding the stone many times with finer abrasives as the process continues until the marble shines. After the marble is grinded and smooth, the stone is sealed to prevent staining, etching, and other potential damage.

Environmental Impact

Overall, the mining of marble is very unsustainable and harmful to the environment. In order to make marble quarries, large amounts of deforestation and habitat destruction needs to happen. Since marble is harvested in large quarries, this further causes soil erosion and water contamination from the large hollow pits that sit below the water table, contaminating groundwater and encouraging erosion. The heavy machinery that is used to extract the marble is also very harmful. These contaminate and destroy surrounding wildlife habitat.

Interior Uses

  • Wall covering -  The marble wall covering displays two book-matched marble slabs creating a symmetrical vein pattern. This creates a focal point that draws the eyes up as the grain pattern flows up.

  • Flooring - Marble flooring adds an elegant feel to the space. It makes the space feel sleek and smooth with the mirror like sheen of the marble.

  • Whole Bathroom - An entire bathroom covered in marble creates a interesting space full of pattern and color. Although the space contains heavy visuals, it still evokes a feeling of elegance and minimalistic qualities because of the uniformity and sleekness of the marble.

  • Table - Marble furniture and specifically, marble tables add a sense of weight to a space. The stone is normally used in thick slabs that add a good contrast and focal point to a space.

  • Sculpture - Marble sculptures have been around since the time of the Greeks. However, marble sculptures are still a great way to add a intriguing decoration and contrast in material.

Marble Countertop

Marble countertops are an interesting way to incorporate a focal point within kitchens. They add in flowing lines and subtle or bold colors to tie in a space. In order to keep marble looking its best, it is advised to use seals to protect it. Depending on the type of marble being used, either a water-based sealant or alcohol-based sealant is needed. Since white marble is less porous than dark marble, it is advised to use alcohol based sealants for white marble and water-based sealants for dark marble. This is because the water based seal stays more surface level, not allowing oils and other liquids to seep deeper into the marble. Overall, food-safe sealants are top priority for a marble kitchen countertop.
